So you want to learn how to build a property portfolio?

Well that's great because so do I!

I'll start by introducing myself :)

My name is Mike Hampton, and I'm 31 years old. I'm managing director of an internet marketing company called Hampton Media Services Limited. We specialise in affiliate marketing techniques as well as domain name acquisition and sales and have been doing so for the last 6 years.

Over this time I have paid off my student debts, been travelling around the southern hemisphere for 15 months and gotten engaged to my better half, Caroline.

I've also accumulated after tax and vat a profit and capital fund of approximately £80,000, which at the moment sits in my bank account earning me next to bugger all in interest.

So what should I do with this £80,000? Well for a start I'm looking at buying a property for Caroline and I to live in in the south west of england. We currently rent in Truro, Cornwall and our lease is set to expire in mid Sept 2007, by which time I hope to have found my first property to buy and move in to. (We're both first time buyers)

Asides from that, assuming £20,000 is taken as deposit and fees for this first property, that still leaves me with £60,000 cashed up capital to invest in something or somewhere.

I've already invested in a few shares for a number of companies I work with at the moment which don't seem to be earning me that much either.

I've also invested £3,000 into National Savings Premium Bonds, with a view to winning £1,000,000!!!. Well we will have to wait and see on those as I only invested in May 2007, so I'm yet to be eligible for my first premium bonds prize draw.

One thing that I have been doing some research on is using the £60,000 available capital to enter the UK buy to let market and begin establishing a property portfolio of my own.

I've got some first time meetings scheduled with 3 specialist investment property consultants in London on July 2nd to discuss the potential for utilising the buy to let avenue to increase my income and capital holding.

As I've never done anything like this before I thought it might make an interesting blog for people to read.

You'll be able to get access to the information I find out along the way, the companies and people I meet with and to keep up to date with the general success or failure I meet with along this path.

I hope that whatever age, race, religion, upbringing or area you are from you'll be able to comment and contribute your own thoughts on the topic as well as find insipiration and ideas for pursuing this path yourself someday.

Although I am a businessman and entrepreneur (who by nature take risks), I prefer a more calculated and educated risk, to one of pissing £60,000 up the wall on the whim of a good chat up from some overpaid consultant, so I hope that my research and portrayal of information and findings will be both beneficial to not only myself but to you, the reader.
